Restorative Justice Halts Slide Into Life Of Crime

Friday, 26th February 2010

"Figures for the Maranguita centre are not available. However, the statistics show that 98% of the inmates aged 18 to 21 at San Juan de Lurigancho prison in Lima have already served time in a detention centre. “When people tell me: ‘They should all be locked up,’ I suggest they take a look inside. Prison is a delinquent’s academy and the kids come out even more violent,” says Schmitz. A world congress has just been organised in Lima on experiments in “restorative juvenile justice”."
