"MANILA, Philippines – To a former trial court judge, Sen. Vicente Sotto III’s tirades against those supportive of the Reproductive Health bill could be considered as attacks on the person rather than the argument.
During a forum in Quezon City, Professor Alfredo Tadiar was particularly enraged by the move of Sotto to tag as “pro-abortion” those pushing for the controversial bill.
“You are attacking the person or the organization and not the merits of the argument,” said Tadiar, who is regarded as the “father of alternative dispute resolution in the Philippines. “
“Kapag wala ka na’ng masabi, atakihin mo yung tao, hindi yung merits (That’s what you do when don’t have anything more to say against the argument – attack the person presenting it, and not its merit),” Tadiar said.
“What did Senator Sotto say?. (That) those pro-RH are pro-abortion …That’s argument ad hominem,” Tadiar said.
At present, Tadiar is the chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department of the Philippine Judicial Academy."
